American Overseas Schools Historical Society
by Marc Curtis

It happens often. I'll be at a dinner party with some clients, or on an airplane sitting next to strangers. The conversation eventually comes around to the question of, "Where are you from?"

If youšre like me (and you probably are if you're reading this!) you stumble for a second then say something like "well, I was born in San Francisco, but I never lived there." Then I mention that I am a Military Brat and one of two things happens--they either laugh and ask what you mean, or they say "Me too!" Often that leads to a mention of the fact that I have no "home town" to call my own.

In December of 2000, I was among a small group who were invited to a meeting in Wichita, Kansas to see what the American Overseas Schools Historical Society is creating. Being one who never attended a school overseas I had somewhat of an attitude in the past of "gee, that's nice--for them!" But my perspective changed after meeting with Dr. Drysdale and the others--and particularly after a visit to the archives.

The group had the opportunity to go to the archive building and look through some of the boxes of photos, yearbooks, documents and other items. It was almost like going through my mom's cedar chest and discovering tidbits of my life that bring back such great memories of childhood!

The museum and archives that will be built in Wichita will contain not only overseas schools memorabilia, but "Section 6" schools as well--the kind of schools many of us attended while living on military installations here in the United States. The archives and museum will have a substantial military brat area and has been selected as the eventual depository of all Operation Footlocker donated military brat memorabilia.

I encourage everyone to support AOSHS and the effort to establish our "Home Town" in Wichita. The Military Brats Network will be very involved with this effort and we'll keep you informed as details develop.

Above is an architectural model of the planned site. For more information about the American Overseas Schools Historical Society, please visit their web site.

Building for the Future

by Vann Baker

In December of 1999, a few brats got together (shown in the photo on the right): Reta Jones Nicholson, Marc Curtis, Vann Baker and Sam Britten. (Glenn Greenwood is not pictured as he was holding the camera).

Naturally, there was a lot of reminiscing about our brat experiences, spam jokes (not the e-mail variety, but the well-known meat substitute kind), but we also came together to see how we could work together for a much greater cause.

During three days of visiting with Tom and Norma Drysdale, seeing the archives, meeting, eating, talking and discussing into the wee hours of the morning, a new alliance emerged: The Military Brats Alliance, an alliance designed to support AOSHS and each otheršs effort.

This and other pages on the Military Brats Online web site, are intended to help promote AOSHS, Operation Footlocker and other Military Brat organizations by spreading the word. Look for exciting news in the near future of Alliance events.
